Space Settlement Design Competition

A team of seven students of Manava Bharati India International School, Panchsheel Park, accompanied by their Physics teacher - Ms. Vandana Hooda participated in Indian national quarterfinal of INSSDC-2017 (INDIAN NATIONAL SPACE SETTLEMENT DESIGN COMPETITION) in Manesar from Nov 2-5, 2017 and won the RUNNER-UP TROPHY.

The concept was sponsored by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Houston, Texas with support from National Space Society (NSS) and NASA, USA. The teams earned the privilege by preparing the best proposals to design a habitat occupying natural Lava Tubes on the surface of Earth’s moon LUNA.

Each team was mentored by a CEO from the industry from countries like Australia, UK, USA and India who gave them technical and management training. Teams from different schools all over India designed an overall structure, defined sources of materials, specified vehicles, provided sources of energy, water management, designed computer and robotics systems for different tasks, community design with cost and schedule. The competition concluded with the teams’ presentation of briefings about their designs to a panel of judges.

Overall it was an amazing experience and helped the students integrate their knowledge and utilize their skills in space science, physics, computer science and innovation with common sense. Each of us at MBIIS is immensely proud of the team!
