Students of Classes XI and XII (Biology group) visited National Institute of Plant Genome Research on 26 October accepting their invitation to the institute’s Open Day/ Outreach Day. 

NIPGR is an autonomous institute funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. NIPGR focuses on high quality Biology research and is involved in training the next generation of plant biologists. Apart from engaging in basic research, the discoveries made in the institute have wider implications for crop improvement.

NIPGR trains students from various developing countries in cutting-edge plant molecular biology research.  The institute is well equipped to carry out advanced research on various aspects and houses facilities like the confocal microscope, photosynthesis measurement, central instrumentation facility etc. -which students who visited the facility were able to view and familiarize themselves with.

Students were able to visit and view -

·         Plant tissue culture lab (with exhibit)

·         Demo experimental laboratory (DNA, protein isolation)

·         Posters and exhibits (on Plant Sciences)

·         View exhibits on molecular barcoding

·         understand the importance of bioinformatics

·         understand importance of genetically modified grain and foods

·         Metabolic engineering to enhance nutritional value of crops

Students are provided with the opportunity to tour the institute and meet young professionals in this field, so that they could be exposed the requirements of this field of work and be motivated towards this field of Science.
